RUINS "Occasional visits" short review @ junorecords

"Recent years have seen sporadic releases from Ruins, a long-serving combo who can rightly claim to be Italian new wave's most celebrated act. Stroom has decided against asking the band for new material; instead, they've rifled through Ruins' archives and put together this fine compilation of rare and unheard material recorded between 1981 and '84. There's much to admire, from the breezy pop shuffle of "Alone" and Cure-influenced, bass-propelled oddness of "Skeleton In Love", to the sparkling synth-pop brilliance of high-tempo number "Boys & Girls" and the punk-funk/dub disco-influenced throb of killer closing cut "It's Not Too Grand".

OCCASIONAL VISITS (2019) by STROOM

Alessandro: “No one can tell for sure that a sound of love actually exists, but love and any other emotion can be reverberated by some musical colors always capable to make emotions resounding here and there during a song, ten songs, a thousand ones...”

The second to last decade of the 20th century was flourishing in its full glory with uncompromising decisions and emergence of new genres to experiment with. Several years before the boom of the 80s is when Alessandro Pizzin got involved with the creation of RUINS and was later joined by Piergiuseppe Ciranna in the fluctuating group constitution. After several alterations in the group it didn’t take long until their duo came together in an attempt to make the first wave twist towards experimenting with electronic sounds. In the frame of the birthtime of many new branches of musical subdivision, the artists fused their intentions and virtuosity to base the centerpiece of their prospective electro sound.

Piergiuseppe: “A characteristic of our music has always been that of moving transversely: from intense emotions to whimsical visions”

In a musical conversation between Piergiuseppe and Alessandro, the productions resulted in a relentless manifestation of a variety of contrasting musical colors. Springing from beneath sinister notes and arpeggiating chords to groundless joy and quirky noises. All of it encompassing the perpetual movement and shift of feelings and positions. Obscurity reflecting the anecdotal nature of life.

Alessandro: “I think that we both were keen on listening to all kinds of music, therefore our sound was the result of all these different listenings and concepts blended with new technology products and equipments we were used to experiment with”

The ranging melodic palette within the compositions, is riddled with external influences manifested in the web of atmospheric scales. Mirroring a plethora of emotions, even though produced quite the while ago, this collection of compositions will undeniably have something to resonate with and object to. Conflicting love, uninhibited anger, driving passion, young maximalism, childlike cynicism. The joy of human existence is inescapably accompanied by utter suffering, taking turns between each other.

Piergiuseppe: “Artistic works, and even songs, should be by definition ineffable, giving suggestions that everyone must then frame and interpret even according to their own experience…”

The path into the light seems dark, the road forward seems to go back. The greatest love seems indifferent, the greatest wisdom seems childish. Each is up to their own interpretation of the songs assembled in this Valentine’s Day speciality. The contradictions perfectly balancing each other out will not leave anyone indifferent. After all, there would be no love without hate.

NEW RECORD - hidden details - (2018)

MY HAPPINESS
The title is in antithesis with the sense of obsessive and pounding repetition that characterizes the piece. It is the product of an imaginary industrial machine or the soundtrack of a piercing and alienating mental obsession. But by contrast these sounds and above all the synth that produces them, are also, for real, my happiness. A short piece, designed as an intro and intensely inspired by Devo and Residents.
(Piergiuseppe Ciranna)

I DON'T KNOW
One of the first songs of the Ruins first duo line-up and it was the creative fuel for the "new" Ruins creative seasons to come. The odd time signature provided by Dr Rhythm 55 Boss Drum Machine was actually the main inspirational factor for this "angular song".
(Alessandro Pizzin)
Lyrics deals with disenchantment and fun the sense of loss that can catch a well-off man when all that on which one counts fades whether it is the "young wife with black shoes" (probably disappeared with her "friend with the yellow socks") or her own house and or private jet.  You just have to console yourself with good Italian food! Musically speaking the almost funky bass ride and rhythm guitar are a clear signature preview of what would have been the sound of the five-element Ruins combo just few months later from this recording.
(Piergiuseppe Ciranna)

BODIES IN THE RUBBISH
Noisy and disturbing solutions, daughters of extreme listening, find a solid anchor in the rhythmic thrust from the synthetic and funky bass. This piece, as well as "Last Night DJ Killed my Wife" and "My Happiness", was part of one to date never aggregated and published pentalogy ironically called "Five Disco Hits".
(Piergiuseppe Ciranna)

LULLABY FOR THE LOVERS
Two tableaux written for a choreographer friend who had requested "something strange" on which to let her students dance freely, I'm not sure I made her happy with these two sketches but, if nothing else, I'm absolutely sure I had fulfilled her request for "something strange"
(Alessandro Pizzin)

NEW RECORD
Along with "Skeleton in love" (unfortunately not featured here) this song is among my personal favorites of those days, to the point that even today I think we were really close to inventing an alternative way to the general songwriting of that particular era.
(Alessandro Pizzin)
A perfect example of how some pieces of the Ruins of the time are so "different" to escape any cataloging; for New Record I wrote a short pessimistic text on the search for stunning and iteration to ignore a hopeless future.
(Piergiuseppe Ciranna)

LAST NIGHT DJ KILLED MY WIFE
The title is obviously a parody of an Indeep hit of the same year. Again, here drum - machines and a synthetic bass of funky matrix support a grotesque vocal part.
(Piergiuseppe Ciranna)

I LOVE YOU
Two lovers in the middle of a storm (or a war) are lulled by a sweet and pulsating rhythm.
(Piergiuseppe Ciranna)

20 SECONDS OVER VENICE AND 6 OVER MESTRE
Our city of adoption deserved at least six seconds of gliding ... Venice instead took care of the remaining time allowed ...
(Alessandro Pizzin)

BOB THE GENTLEMAN
As the title might suggest, elsewhere there is a Mr. Bob (Gentleman, but above all a King) to whom I owe many of my personal sound emotions ... this an early 1981 oblique tribute to him ... although not required.
(Alessandro Pizzin)

TRICKS TO SURVIVE
To me this is THE song par excellence of  1981/1982 Ruins, a perfect example of the "new sogwriting" with which we found ourselves working in those profitable days. This version in duo is particularly bare and essential, but I also like to mention the five-men-band line-up version, which i really hope you will be able to listen in a possible future, that reaches a further level of undefinable dark no-wave charm.
(Alessandro Pizzin)
An unusual harmonic structure is the skeleton of an anomalous song. Here, as in "New Record" and "Last Night DJ Killed My Wife" use in the "solo" part that I then called "the voice of the monster", a mixture of vocalizations and phonemes that pay a strong tribute Dada to the Kurt Schwitters' "Ur -Sonate". Featuring explicit lyrics on the "struggle for living".
(Piergiuseppe Ciranna)

THE TRY
In Ferrara, back in January 1981, we performed in trio with a great desire to experiment with music and multimedia even though the equipments at our disposal were dramatically reduced ... the whole performance - part of an evening shared with other artists such as Kaapaa, Fred Butzmann and Neon - was characterized by a strong and abstract sound work on some pre-recorded tracks able to cyclically anchor the whole to a solid concert dimension ... i'm still sure that it was a wonderful experience.
(Alessandro Pizzin)
Listening to it again after such a long time I am still amazed by the ruthlessness, by the courage but also by the maturity in experimenting ... and we were just 21 years old
(Piergiuseppe Ciranna)

CHIC ONE
This is the result of when a Korg MS20 manual becomes a source of inspiration for an impromptu home recording session
(Alessandro Pizzin)
Weirdness and fun ... reciting an instruction manual is really BIZARRE!
(Piergiuseppe Cirannna)

LOVE WE'VE SHARED
A personal reflection dedicated to a subject that seems (erroneously) far from our music.
(Alessandro Pizzin)

FREAK SONG
For this song I just took the drum base of "Fit of Nerves" recorded by the Ruins in expanded combo line-up  ... it is a raging, disillusioned and deformed outburst about the meaning that the music assumes when one moves away from his (trivialized) ideals: ".... music is life, music is love ... "
(Piergiuseppe Cirannna)

TOMORROW
A sonic vision of the surrounding world ... quite in advance given the coming one.
(Alessandro Pizzin)

ITALIAN TRANSLATION

MY HAPPINESS
(Piergiuseppe Ciranna)

I DON'T KNOW
(Piergiuseppe Ciranna)

BODIES IN THE RUBBISH
(Piergiuseppe Ciranna)

LULLABY FOR THE LOVERS
(Alessandro Pizzin)

NEW RECORD
(Piergiuseppe Ciranna)

LAST NIGHT THE DJ KILLED MY WIFE
(Piergiuseppe Ciranna)

I LOVE YOU
(Piergiuseppe Ciranna)

20 SECONDS OVER VENICE AND 6 OVER MESTRE
La nostra città d'adozione meritava almeno sei secondi di planata... a Venezia invece abbiamo dedicato il restante tempo concesso ... grazie a Pere Ubu.
(Alessandro Pizzin)

BOB THE GENTLEMAN
(Alessandro Pizzin)

TRICKS TO SURVIVE
(Piergiuseppe Ciranna)

THE TRY

(Piergiuseppe Cirannna)

LOVE WE'VE SHARED

(Alessandro Pizzin)

... restless and haunted ...

391 Vol.6 - Veneto (2018)

... a voyage through the deep 80's underground in Italy

It's not that easy that this fellowship of sound makers gets an opportunity to meet each other and talk about what their music was, what is now and which one will it be in the next future.
Thanks to the release of this double cd compilation focused on the music of north-east of Italy back in the eighties, this rare opportunity has finally become possible.

A great amount of creative energy in a small place gives the impression that old memories might be converted into brand new ideas to enrich individual musical experience ... and, why not, even in a new collective dimension.

Time will tell.

For now it has been a great pleasure to listen to the new (still unreleased) album by Massimo Filippi filed under the name of his well known band Nite Lite and aptly entitled "STILL" ... 12 tracks floating between the resounding memories of the old days but with a new and original perspective.

At the same time RUINS showcased to these highly entitled friends some of the more recent recordings unfortunately still far from being officially released.
It was a great pleasure to receive positive reactions from these long time friends and comrades of sounds.

We are already looking forward the next chance to share some time (and sounds) together!

HOT LEG

... we are very happy to announce the recent release of an interesting "audio documentary" focused on the Italian New wave scene back in the eighties that features  also RUINS with a curious and oscure track from his studio repertoire dated back in 1983 ... HOT LEG.
As a side note it seems interesting to point up that Pergiuseppe Ciranna and Alessandro Pizzin are featured as special guests on the BLUE VELVET track also included in this interesting and highly recommended indipendent compilation ...
